Zhiwu Lu is a Professor and PhD Supervisor at the Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence, Renmin University of China. He received his M.S. degree from the Department of Information Science, School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University, in 2005, and his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong, in 2011. His research focuses primarily on machine learning and computer vision. He developed BriVL, the first publicly available Chinese general-purpose vision-language pre-trained model, and released VDT, a video generation foundation model comparable to Sora, ahead of OpenAI. For these achievements, he was named a 2024 Scientist of the Year by Nan Feng Chuang. He serves as a committee member of the CCF Bioinformatics Special Interest Group and the National Technical Committee on Radio, Film and Television Standardization. He has also served as an Area Chair for top international conferences, including ICLR and UAI.
